Footium Living Roadmap Update

As we mentioned in late 2024, we’ll continue to provide updates every few months on what we’re working on and what’s coming next. Our roadmap is a living document that evolves based on community feedback, game economy needs and the Footium team’s priorities. While the roadmap below may not reflect the exact order of updates, we hope it gives you a clear idea of the direction the game is heading in!

Also, a huge thank you to everyone who has shared feedback through Discord and our seasonal feedback forms. This is a huge help for us when discussing our product roadmap — taking into account the community’s desires and evaluating them alongside our observations, metrics, and vision is a key part of our process.

After each season, the feedback is analysed by George and a summary is presented to the entire team to ensure everyone is aware of the current community sentiment and thoughts!

🔧 Roadmap Adjustments

Above is our current plans with regards to product additions. As you can see, there has been some adjustments from the image released in Q4, notably the moving forward of match engine upgrades, player records, and infrastructure improvements, alongside the deprioritising of the retired player gameplay feature and saved lineups.

✅ Since the last update, we’ve also achieved and moved off the roadmap:

The Roadmap is a living document, evaluated internally each season to ensure it stays aligned with our goals and remains the best path for Footium’s development. As priorities evolve, future updates may bring further changes, but our commitment remains the same — providing visibility into our plans and keeping the community informed.

For example, features that are currently in the ‘in-design’ phase may not definitely be worked on once everything in the ‘building’ phase is complete — there may be issues we run into in the building design which mean the feature doesn’t make sense to work on next or at all!

📌 Why We’re Making These Adjustments

⚙️ Match Engine Improvements

The Match Engine is something we plan to continuously improve throughout Footium’s development. It has already gone through many iterations during initial playtesting to get to where we are today. We’re now working on the next version, with some foundational changes (that don’t impact gameplay) already live in Season 5. These changes allow us to gather more data for balancing future improvements. Another round of updates, including improved player selection logic, is coming in Season 6.

We aim to have the bulk of this round of improvements live in Season 7. These changes will: 🔄 Directly impact game outcomes, leading to more realistic results. 📊 Improve statistical accuracy, particularly in games with extreme quality differentials.

These enhancements also lay the groundwork for greater tactical depth in the future, though that is not an immediate priority on the roadmap.

The Match Engine is a fundamental part of Footium, and while it currently meets our goal of ensuring that well-managed, skilled teams perform better over a season, improvements are still needed at the individual match level. Based on user feedback, we will also be addressing outstanding bugs to further enhance match accuracy and fairness.

🛠️ Prioritising Infrastructure Improvements

As part of our original roadmap, we anticipated the need for infrastructure improvements to support Footium as it scales. However, intermittent issues faced by some users over the last couple of seasons have highlighted the urgency of these improvements. As a result, we have reprioritised them to ensure a smoother, more stable, and secure experience while playing Footium.

We believe the primary cause of recent performance issues is API-related, and we are actively working on solutions to improve stability. While we continue to investigate, we appreciate the community’s patience and feedback in helping us diagnose and resolve these issues.

As Footium grows, infrastructure improvements will remain an ongoing focus. Balancing platform stability and performance with new feature development is always a challenge, but our priority is ensuring that your experience remains seamless.

📊 Player Records Arrive

As discussed in the past, we have waited until we’ve delivered the Improved Player Selection part of the Match Engine upgrades before displaying records such as Top Scorers and Most Appearances throughout the game.

Now that this part of the Match Engine improvements are in place for Season 6, we’ve been able to squeeze in the first iteration of Player Records, addressing a highly requested feature since launch.

There are still many enhancements we want to make to Player Records, including: 📌 — More record types 📌 — Better breakdowns for Clubs 📌 — Historical season data 📌 — Improved UX for viewing records

These improvements will continue to evolve in future updates!

🏆 Adding Cups

Cups in Footium have always been part of the game’s vision, and we’re excited to bring them to life. This is a technically complex feature as it requires reworking some existing infrastructure, but the benefits — such as guaranteeing varied gameplay each season and giving managers more strategic decisions — make it a highly valuable addition.

We’re still in the early design phase, ensuring it delivers what the game needs right now while also being a fun and engaging feature for Footium Club owners. We’ll be sure to share more updates as development progresses!

🚀 Onboarding Improvements

Social Wallet login was on the previous roadmap, but we’ve now also added Fiat Onboarding and the Transfer Market to the ‘in-design’ section. The goal of these features is to provide a seamless onboarding experience for users who are not experienced in web3, allowing us to massively expand our marketing efforts and reach tens of millions of football management players.

For the past three years, Footium’s focus has been almost entirely on game development. Now that we are post-launch with a highly retentive game and a huge target market, it’s the right time to make crucial product improvements that enable a major growth push.

🔑 Why this is a game changer: Our data and marketing campaigns so far have shown that onboarding has been one of the biggest friction points for new users. These improvements will remove some of those blockers, making it easier than ever for new managers to get started and unlocking huge potential for expansion.

Bringing in more users will create higher demand within the in-game economy, help us build an even more vibrant ecosystem and allow us as a studio to scale the team and deliver even more exciting features in the future!

⏰ Adding Match Time Improvements

Improving the ability for managers to attend matches live is another addition to the Roadmap. This is something we had discussed in the past but had yet to find a great solution that wouldn’t negatively impact some managers’ existing experience.

We recognise that managing during live games is a key attraction of Footium, and that managers who cannot attend live may feel at a significant disadvantage. With this in mind, we plan to make changes in this area to enhance the overall experience for all managers.

🧓 Retired Players Feature Deprioritised

The retired players feature we spoke about on our Q4 2024 Roadmap is something we are still keen on developing in future, however given the importance of the aforementioned features and infrastructure improvements, it has been deprioritised for now. We have limited development resources at the moment, so have to ensure we prioritise ruthlessly as to not spread ourselves too thin and fail to deliver the core things needed right now.

💾Saved Lineups Back

Similarly with Saved Lineups, whilst this would be a helpful UX improvement for managers and would save a bit of time each day, it is not as important as the features mentioned and has therefore been moved back on the roadmap. We still plan to allow saved lineups in future!

📈 Increasing Development Resource

At the moment, we are a small team at Footium. However, off the back of a successful launch and first few seasons, we now have the ability to expand our development team, which will allow us to deliver improvements to the game more rapidly in future. As some of you may have noticed, we’ve already started hiring over the past month and will continue to do so to bring top talent into Footium. Expanding our team will increase our capacity to deliver updates consistently throughout the year.Additionally, Archie has been offered a great opportunity to further his career at an award winning games studio & has recently left the Footium team. We wish him all the best moving forward!Recruitment does require significant time investment upfront, including candidate screenings, interviews, and technical tests, which may temporarily impact available development resources. However, we believe this is the right long-term decision, as it will allow us to improve the game at a much greater pace moving forward. We have big ambitions for Footium, there are so many improvements and community-driven ideas we want to bring to life. Expanding our team is a crucial step in ensuring we can deliver on these plans and make Footium the best experience possible.

🔭 Footium’s Vision

Looking a bit longer-term on the product side, we wanted to paint a picture of how we see Footium developing over the coming years and the game we want to build, inspired by our own vision and the desires of the community. As this section looks further ahead, features mentioned here are not guaranteed to be added in the future, as it’s difficult to predict how the game and community will evolve beyond the next few months. However, we hope this provides a helpful insight into the direction we currently see the game heading.

🏟️ Expanding Club Ownership Features

One area of the game we’d definitely like to expand is the Club Ownership side. Right now, Footium leans more toward football management rather than football club ownership in terms of features. However, we’ve seen how much the community values true ownership of their Footium Club.In every season’s feedback form, we consistently receive requests for more ownership features, such as:

While we could roll out basic versions of these features quickly, we want to ensure they provide meaningful strategic decisions and remain engaging across multiple seasons. For this reason, we have not actively worked on these features yet but plan to do so once the current roadmap is near completion.

⚽ Expanding Tactical Management & Match Engine Improvements

We also plan to introduce more tactical management tools alongside further Match Engine improvements. This will allow managers to:

These additions will help managers make better-informed decisions and create a deeper, more immersive football management experience.

🌍 Strengthening the Social & Cultural Side of Footium

We see huge potential in expanding the social and cultural aspects of Footium. This has always been part of our vision and played a key role in our decision to define club names, badges, and backgrounds ourselves. It’s been incredible to see the community embrace club ownership, building:

So far, we haven’t introduced many features to support or grow this aspect of the game, but we have prototyped several ideas internally. We believe this could become an extremely engaging area of Footium, helping to build world depth, emotional connections to clubs and players, and stronger community ties — especially with the help of AI.While these ideas are longer-term, they represent the exciting future we envision for Footium. As we progress through our current roadmap, we will continue to evaluate and refine these concepts to ensure they align with both our vision and community desires.

🎬 The Journey So Far & What’s Next

The entire Footium Team wants to express a massive thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey. A special shoutout to those who stuck with us, provided valuable feedback, and helped shape Footium as we built towards launch.

📊 A Few Highlights from the First Few Seasons of Footium:

This point marks a significant inflection point for Footium. We now have:

Of course, it hasn’t always been plain sailing — game development comes with its challenges. There have been bumps along the way, but we hope it’s clear just how dedicated the Footium Team is to improving the game and unlocking its full potential. We truly believe Footium has the ability to redefine football management as a social, rewarding, and competitive experience. We’re incredibly grateful to have you on this journey with us, and we’re beyond excited to continue building, evolving, and improving Footium together for years to come.Vamos! 🚀⚽
