If you’ve told friends about Footium before and they didn’t join, it was usually for the same reasons. It felt complicated, they didn’t want to pay straight away, or they just weren’t sure what they were signing up for.
That’s changed.
A lot of the improvements we’ve made over the last few seasons have happened in the background. Step by step, we’ve removed friction, simplified the flow, and made it much easier for new managers to get into the game quickly.
What happens when you invite a friend
When you send your invite link, your friend can join in just a few clicks on mobile or desktop using their email. Once they sign up, they’re instantly given a caretaker club and can start playing straight away.
There’s no upfront purchase, no complicated setup & no strings attached. They can manage their team and compete in league matches across the live season
Why this feels different to before
In the past, trying Footium meant understanding a lot up front. Friends can now play first and decide later. They can experience the game properly before choosing whether they want to upgrade, and there’s no pressure to make that decision early.
If they enjoy the game and decide to upgrade at any point, they keep the same club they’ve been managing all season. Nothing resets and no progress is lost. Upgrades can be done by owning just the club for $30 or by purchasing a full Starter Bundle for $100. Once upgraded, they also become eligible for any rewards they would have earned during the season.
Caretaker managers and competition
Caretaker managers compete alongside each other throughout the season. The highest-ranked caretaker will receive a $100 Starter Bundle, giving them full ownership of their club and squad.
This means new managers can genuinely compete while playing for free, with a clear reward for strong performance.
Referral rewards and bonuses
Inviting friends also comes with rewards for existing managers. If a friend joins using your invite link and later upgrades, you’ll earn 20% cashback on their purchase. Referrals are tracked even if the upgrade happens later.
Alongside this, the referral ladder is running with milestone rewards based on the number of successful referrals you make.
Always-on referral milestones
Footium has a set of permanent referral milestones that are always active and never reset. As you successfully refer more managers who go on to upgrade, you’ll unlock rewards as you progress through the milestone ladder.
These milestones are designed to reward long-term supporters of the game, and every successful referral continues to count towards your next reward across seasons.
Seasonal referral bonuses
Alongside the permanent milestones, we also run limited-time referral bonuses.
For the current bonus window, managers who achieve three or more paid referrals will receive a Prime Silver Player as an additional reward. These seasonal bonuses sit on top of the always-on referral milestones, meaning referrals made during these periods count towards both.
How referrals are tracked
Referrals are tracked when a new manager joins using your custom invite link. If that manager upgrades later, whether that’s immediately or later in the season, the referral is still attributed to you. There’s no need for your friend to upgrade straight away for the referral to count.
Why we’re highlighting this now
Many managers joined Footium when things were more complex, and it’s easy to assume that’s still the case. But the onboarding experience today is very different. Friends can join quickly, play without commitment, and decide what they want to do once they’ve actually experienced the game.
If you’ve got mates who enjoy football management games but didn’t join before, it’s worth nudging them again, because the barrier to entry is much lower than it used to be!
