Academy Upgrades Deep Dive: Build Your Future in Season 22

The full breakdown of your Academy Campus: what each facility does, what it costs, and what is live for Season 22.

TL;DR - what you need to know for Season 22

You can impact your Season 22 academy prospects, but you need to act quickly.

S22 Hero Academy Deep Dive

When we announced Season 22, we promised a full deep dive on Academy Upgrades before the season starts. Here it is.

We are really excited about this one. Academy Upgrades add a whole new layer of club building on top of stadiums, and for the first time they give you genuine influence over the players coming through your club.

The idea in one line: your academy is now a campus of facilities, you develop those facilities with FC, and better facilities produce better intakes.

Four of them open this week and have an impact. The rest follow through the season. Everything below covers the full system so you can plan ahead, and we have marked clearly what is live now.

🚦 What is live for Season 22

Open from Wednesday:

Arriving later: Accommodation Block, Scouting Office, Talent ID Department, International Scouting Network.

So for this season specifically:

Pre-season works differently this time

Normally your academy intake lands at the start of pre-season and you find out what you got. This season we are doing it the other way round.

Your facilities open first, you spend your grant on the facilities you care about, using your grant and any other FC you have or buy from the store, and only then does your intake arrive. So for the first time you get to influence your cohort before you see it, rather than after.

We appreciate that is a tight turnaround, but after seeing how excited you all were about Academy Upgrades, the devs have worked extremely hard to deliver some facilities that can impact your Season 22 intake. If you leave your facilities at Level 0, your intake still arrives, it is just built on an undeveloped campus.

🧱 How the Academy Campus works

Every club's academy has usually produced 7 prospects a season, with the quality of those prospects set by your division: your current rating band and your rare chance both depend on where you sit in the FFL. From Season 22, quality is influenced by facilities you own and develop.

Your Academy Campus is made up of eight facilities. Each one controls a different part of your intake, and each one has its own level that you upgrade separately.

You pick a facility, pay the FC, and it goes up one level. One facility, one level at a time, exactly like upgrading a stand at your stadium.

Every facility runs from Level 0 to Level 5:

S22 Table 12 Facility Levels

These levels are new upgrade paths. They show how far you have developed that part of your campus, not where your club already was before this feature.

🏗 The eight facilities

S22 Table 01 Facilities Overview

You do not have to build the same academy as anyone else. Your club, your strategy, your future!

🎯 What this means for your club at launch

Because the campus is brand new, every club in Footium starts with every facility at Level 0, from clubs founded last week right through to clubs that have been running since day one. Nobody starts ahead and nobody starts behind.

Which is exactly why every eligible owned club receives a one-off FC grant, more than enough to get your facilities producing benefits equivalent to your previous academy strength. It also means you can get hands-on with academy upgrading straight away rather than waiting a season, and we would genuinely appreciate your feedback and suggestions once you have had a go with it.

The choice is yours:

Two clubs receiving exactly the same grant can end up with two completely different academies.

💰 What upgrades cost

Everything is paid for in FC, the same currency you use on your stadium and earn from home matches and end-of-season rewards.

To help fund all of this, end-of-season division rewards are going up from 8,000,000 FC to 10,000,000 FC per division from Season 22.

The eight facilities sit in three cost groups. The more a facility changes about your intake, the more it costs to develop:

S22 Table 02 Upgrade Costs

Early upgrades are reachable. Getting several facilities to Level 3 is a real season's ambition. Getting anything to Level 5 is a project that will take you seasons, in the same way a 70,000-seater stadium does.

✅ Live from Season 22

🌱 Training Pitches

What it does: raises the minimum current rating of your prospects, so they arrive closer to first-team ready.

Cost group: Core impact.

Current rating still depends on your division, and that does not change. What changes is where the bottom of your intake's rating range sits compared to the standard division range.

S22 Table 03 Training Pitches

Here is what that looks like in practice. Say your division's standard base rating range is 50 to 55. At Level 0 your range would stretch down to 48 to 55. At Level 2 it sits at the standard 50 to 55. At Level 5 it becomes 53 to 55, so every prospect in your intake arrives at the top end of what your division normally produces.

That is how a club fighting its way up the pyramid can build an academy that produces players ahead of its own division.

This is the one facility that starts below where you are today, so it is the obvious first thing to spend your grant on.

🧠 Academy Office

What it does: raises the minimum potential of your non-rare prospects.

Cost group: Core impact.

At the moment, a normal academy prospect arrives with a potential somewhere between 15 and 25, and every number in that range comes up as often as any other. Around half of your intake lands below 20.

The Academy Office lifts the bottom of that range. The top does not move.

S22 Table 04 Academy Office

At Level 5, every single normal prospect in your intake arrives at 20 potential or better, and every name in front of you on intake day is one worth thinking seriously about.

S22 Academy 04 Academy Office

This one does not affect rare prospects.

🏃 Performance Centre

What it does: guarantees a minimum stamina for every prospect in your intake.

Cost group: Squad control.

Stamina does a lot more from Season 22: high-stamina players hold up across more matches, really tired players carry more of an injury risk, and rotation becomes part of managing a season properly.

So this is the facility that answers something managers have wanted for a long time, which is a way to stop unfit prospects coming through your club at all.

S22 Table 05 Performance Centre

Worth being clear about what this facility is. It is a guarantee, not a boost. It does not make your best prospects fitter, and it does not touch the top of the range. What it does is remove the ones who would have arrived unfit.

At Level 5, no prospect in your intake arrives below 75 stamina. At Level 0 there is no floor at all, and some of your intake will arrive well below that.

🗣 Changing Rooms

What it does: guarantees a minimum leadership for every prospect in your intake.

Cost group: Club identity.

Leadership matters more from Season 22, because your captain's leadership now has a stronger influence on how your team performs. The armband is a decision, not a formality.

Which makes this the facility that produces your future captains.

S22 Table 06 Changing Rooms

At Level 5, every prospect who comes through your academy arrives with leadership of at least 85. Bring one through, hand him the armband in three seasons, and you have a captain your academy produced rather than one you had to go and buy.

Like the Performance Centre, this is a floor rather than a boost. It is one of the cheapest facilities in the campus, and pound for pound it is the one that changes the most about your intake.

🛏 Accommodation Block

What it does: decides how many prospects arrive in your intake.

Cost group: Core impact.

S22 Table 07 Accommodation Block

Until this facility arrives, every club continues to receive the usual 7 prospects. Once it is live, Level 5 takes you to 10, which is three more players who could earn a place in your squad, or be worth something to other managers.

🧭 Scouting Office

What it does: lets you tell your scouts what you need before the intake arrives.

Cost group: Squad control.

S22 Table 08 Scouting Office

This is the facility managers have asked for most. If your squad needs a centre-back, you can send your scouts out looking for a centre-back. You can also ask for the same position more than once.

S22 Academy 03 Scouting

One thing worth knowing for when it lands: each instruction guarantees at least one matching prospect, but position and nationality instructions are handled separately. They may land on different players rather than producing a single prospect who matches both.

🔎 Talent ID Department

What it does: decides your chance of a rare prospect, and how many rares one intake can contain.

Cost group: Squad control.

Your rare chance has always been decided by your division: the higher you climb, the better your chance of one arriving. Once this facility is live, you can raise it yourself.

S22 Table 09 Talent Id

To put numbers on it: if your division's normal chance were 10%, a Level 3 Talent ID Department would take it to 15%, a 50% increase in likelihood. Level 4 would take it to 20% and Level 5 to 30%.

For Season 22, rare chances stay exactly as they are today.

🌍 International Scouting Network

What it does: lets you choose where your prospects come from.

Cost group: Club identity.

S22 Table 10 International Scouting

Want a Brazilian spine? An all-English XI? A squad built around one nation you have supported since you were a kid? This is the facility that gets you there, and you can ask for the same country more than once.

It also opens the door to nation-themed features we want to build in the future.

🔨 Keeping your academy in good order

Like your stadium, a developed academy needs looking after. It works the same way stadium maintenance does, and here is exactly how it is set:

S22 Table 11 Maintenance

If one of your facilities needs work, you will see it clearly in the Facilities tab along with the FC cost. You have the season to deal with it, and it keeps giving you its benefits in the meantime.

None of this applies in the launch season. Maintenance will not begin until the rollover into Season 23, so you have a full season to build your academy up before upkeep starts to count.

🎮 How this all works in game

Academy Upgrades still live inside the Academy tab. We are not moving the academy somewhere else, we are adding more control inside the place you already use.

The Academy tab is split into three areas:

So the flow is simple. Upgrade your facilities, then see what your academy brings back on intake day.

S22 Academy 01 Facilities

🔄 How it all connects

  1. You earn FC from home matches and end-of-season rewards, or buy it directly in the (now possible with a credit card!)
  2. You spend it developing the facilities that suit your club
  3. Your next intake arrives shaped by all of your choices and investments
  4. Sign your chosen prospects so they can become first-team players, transfer income, or club legends

Stadiums build your matchday. The academy builds your squad. Between them, your club becomes something you develop over years.

⚠️ A note on the first season

This is a brand new system and a significant change to how academies have always worked in Footium, so we are rolling it out in stages and watching it closely.

We will be looking at how the grant gets spent, which facilities managers prioritise, how intake quality moves across the divisions, and how the whole thing feels once you have had an intake through it. If costs, benefits or the grant need adjusting, we will adjust them and tell you why.

As always, tell us how it feels in Discord and the end-of-season survey.

❓ FAQs

Will this actually affect my Season 22 prospects, or is it a Season 23 thing?

Season 22, as long as you upgrade on Wednesday. Your facilities open before your intake arrives, so whatever you build is applied to this season's cohort.

Are upgrades instant?

Yes. Pay the FC and the facility goes up a level immediately, which is exactly why the Wednesday window works.

What happens if I do not spend my grant before Thursday?

Your intake still arrives as normal, it is just built on an undeveloped campus. Three of the four live facilities sit at parity at Level 0, so nothing gets worse there. The exception is Training Pitches, which starts 2 below your division's normal rating floor.

Can a Division 8 club build a Division 1 academy?

No. Your division still sets the range your prospects come from, and facilities only move the floor within that range. A fully upgraded Division 8 academy produces excellent Division 8 prospects, not Division 1 ones.

Do facilities do more at higher divisions?

No. Every level does the same thing whatever division you are in. A Level 3 Training Pitches is 1 above your division's normal floor whether you are in Division 1 or Division 8. What differs is the division band it is applied to, not the size of the effect.

Do I keep my facilities next season?

Yes. Levels persist season to season, so this is a long-term project rather than something that resets. Maintenance does not begin until the rollover into Season 23.

Why can I not choose positions or nationalities yet?

The Scouting Office and International Scouting Network are not live yet. They arrive later this season, and until then your intake is spread across the pitch exactly as it always has been.

Your next club legend has to come from somewhere. Time to build the place he comes from.
